SCOTTISH WRITERS
Sir Walter Scott (from a painting by Henry Raeburn)
Sir Walter Scott is one of the greatest novelists of the 19th Century,
having invented the genre of the historical novel almost single-handedly.
His series of novels, known as theWaverly Novels, were the inspiration
for the opera,Lucia di Lammermoor, the popularization of the
legendary heroes Rob Roy, Ivanhoe and Robin Hood and
the resurgence of Scottish Culture and National Heritage. Tartan, bagpipe
music, country dancing and Scottish country walks all rose in favour
following the success of his books.
