Identity: you only THINK you know who you are. Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Cognitive Sciences all have ways to persuade you otherwise... In Romance, the issues of Identity usually include three: (1) the Heroine's sense of self; through aspirations; (2) the Hero's sense of self; through his employment and accomplishments; (3) a Love-based sense of shared identity as a couple. Imaginary: means something rather different for Friends as for Numbers... Mihail Iminovici: Romania's greatest poet was surely Mihail Iminovici, who wrote under the pseudonym Mihail Eminescu. His madness kept his output small, but his works such as "Venus and the Madonna" and "The Epigony" show the delicately sensitive and pessimistic view of the nature of humanity. As a Romantic poet, he played with fantasy themes including aspects of the legends and philosophies of India. The beauty of his language influenced many later prose and poetry works of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Return to Romance Authors I Table of Contents

In Romance, the word may describe a virgin's introduction to sexuality. Inklings: see C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. This triumvirate of campus friends all succeeded in writing extraordinary Fantasy novels, which have at best Romantic subplots. Tolkien is sadly thin on love relationships, and the amazing three film adapattation of his "Lord of the Rings" by Peter Jackson had to beef up the Romance subplots considerably. Ub Iwerks (1901-1972): co-creator of Mickey Mouse, crucially involved in many Disney shorts and animations including the "Silly Symphony" shorts, "Cindarella" [1950], "Peter Pan" [1953], "Lady and the Tramp" [1955], "Sleeping Beauty" [1959]; then had a falling-out with Disney (who absurdly claimed to have created Mickey Mouse himself) and was nominated for an Academy Award for his technical effects in Hitchcock's "The Birds" [1963]. Listed in The Ultimate Romance Fiction Database for those 4 Romance animated features: "Cindarella", "Peter Pan", "Lady and the Tramp", "Sleeping Beauty". For many Romance readers, that was a first exposure to Romance themes.
