As a critic, he was publically in debate with H.G. Wells over the nature of literature. Contemporaries felt that Henry James won the argument, but science fiction fans have a revisionist analysis. James' classical syntax (i.e. rich vocabulary, precise terminology, lengthy sentences) and psychological depth make up for mid-brow readers' sense that nothing really happens in his plots. This is an asset in ghost stories, at which Henry James excelled. See, for example, "The Ghostly Tales of Henry James" (New Brunswick NJ: Rutgers U. Press, 1948; New York: Grosset, 1963), "The Short Stories of Henry James" (New York: Random House, 1945), "The Turn of the Screw" (New York: Macmillan, 1898) which has been filmed as "The Innocents" {hotlink to be done} and televised {link to be done} Janice James: Regency Romance Novels: * A Lady of Repute [1982] Jillian James: Contemporary Romance Novels: * The Marriage Dance [Mar 1998] * The Midnight Hour [Oct 1999] John James (1923?-1993?): British * Votan [London: Cassell, 1966] comedy/fantasy on Teutonic myth * Not For All the Gold in Ireland [1968] comedy/fantasy on Celtic myth * The Bridge of Sand [1976] Juvenal the Roman poet-soldier narrates Josephine James: Contemporary Romance Novels: * An Affair of the Heart * Assignment in Alaska * Peace Corps Nurse * Private Nurse * Senior Nurse Julia James: Contemporary Romance Novels: * The Greek Tycoon's Mistress [HP-2328, June 2003] Kristin James: Contemporary Romance Novels: * The Golden Sky [1981] * Heartwood * The Sapphire Sky [Nov 1981] * The Summer Sky [June 1981] * A Wedding Gift [HT-62, June 1985] * Once in a Blue Moon [SD-962, Nov 1995] * The Last Groom on Earth [SD-986, Mar 1996] * Dreams of Evening [SIM-1, June 1983] * The Amber Sky [SIM-17, Oct 1983] * Morning Star [SIM-45, May 1984] * Secret Fires [SIM-69, Nov 1984] * Worlds Apart [SIM-89, Apr 1985] * Cutter's Lady [SIM-125, Jan 1986] * A Very Special Favor [SIM-136, Mar 1986] * Salt of the Earth [SIM-385, Jun 1991] * The Letter of the Law [SIM-393, Aug 1991] Historical Romance Novels: * Tumbleweed Christmas [AN-67, Nov 189] * Jesse's Wife [AN-144, June 1994] * Satan's Angel [HH-1, July 1988] * The Gentleman [HH-43, Apr 1990] * The Yankee [HH-57, Nov 1990] Leigh Franklin James: Historical Romance Novels: * Cry of the Hawk [Aug 1984] * Flight of the Hawk [date?] * The Hawk and the Dove [date?] * Night of the Hawk [date?] * Quest of the Hawk [date?] * Revenge of the Hawk [date?] * Shadow of the Hawk [date?] * Wings of the Hawk [date?] Livia James: Historical Romance Novels: * The Emerald Land [Mar 1983] M[ontague] R[hodes] James [1 Aug 1862-12 Jun 1936) British scientist/author involved in archaeology in Crete and Cyprus, Provost of Eton, Director of the FitzWilliam Museum at Cambridge, his short story "Casting the Runes" was filmed as "Curse of the Demon" {link to be done} and noted for superior ghost stories in 8 volumes; Clute & Grant add (and provide details on the above): * The Five Jars [1922] Children's Fantasy Clute & Grant also refer to "The James Gang" of ghost story authors affiliates with M.
