PUBLISHERS are the companies that employ editors, produce books, have books printed, arrange to distribute books, market books, and ultimately ensure that the works of your favorite writers end up in your hands. For other key definitions in the romance industry, see: Romance Definitions. Collectively, publishers in the North American market (USA plus Canada) published 2,523 Romance book titles in 1999 (originals plus reprints); 2,289 titles in 2000; and 2,143 titles in 2001. I'll add the numbers for 2002 and 2003 when I confirm them. Romance Writers of America, Inc., is the primary source of the data on this web page. Not all publishers are created equal. Romance Writers of America, for instance, focusses on those publishers whose books and authors are eligible for RITA Awards. "A RITA-eligible publisher is defined as a non-subsidy, non-vanity publisher that has released books on a regular basis via national distribution for a minimum of one year and has sold a minimum of 1,500 hardcover/trade paperback copies or 5,000 copies of any other format of a single fiction book or a novella or collection of novellas in book form."
