Arthur Upfield

Arthur W. Upfield (1888-1964): Sent by a disappointed father from Englad to Australia in 1911, Arthur W. Upfield wandered the country as a cook, sheep station boundary rider, miner, and other itinerant jobs. he served in the Australian Imperial Force in World War I, fighting in Gallipoli, Egypt, and France. He married Ann Douglas, returned to England, worked as a private secretary, considered the move "a disaster", returned to Australia, failed to reconcile with wife and son, and again wandered the country soaking up incidents for his writing. He tried and failed at writing thrillers. He wrote a novel The House of Cain [1929] about a mad millionaire's safe house for murderers. Then the big break: he spent time with an old friend, the half-caste Tracker Leon and decided to write about a half-Aborigine detective, and the "Inspector Bonaparte" series was born. Late in life he became notable in the Australian Geological Society, and launched scientific expeditions. Arthur W.
