Tanner (19 Feb 1896-9 Jan 1974) American author who started with contest-winning "The Color of Space" (Science Wonder, Mar 1930) and is best known for the "Tumithak" series, which started with: "Tumithak of the Corridors" (Amazing Stories, Jan 1932; reprinted Feb 1967), a novella which Isaac Asimov particularly liked and recommended. The series continued with "Tumithak in Shawm" (Amazing Stories, June 1933) and "Tumithak of the Towers of Fire" (Super Science, Nov 1941). By an amazing coincidence, I had Charles R. Tanner's son as a student in one of the classes I taught, and he gave me a copy of a manuscript of an unpublished 4th story in the Tumithak series. I have, to date, failed to have it published, and an Italian anthology by Editrice Nord which was to have premiered it, after having published the other three stories. This unfortunately fell through. Perhaps someday soon in this very web domain... Davies, 1968) about Australia tearing loose from the British Commonwealth, and then being internally crushed by Newspaper-smashing tyrants. I think I saw a television adaptation of this. In any case, it neatly fictionalizes Thomas Jefferson's famous dictum about preferring Newspapers with no Government to Government with no Newspapers. As a journalist who has been thrown in jail (albeit for just 4 hours) by jack-booted thugs protecting a politician whom I was openly criticizing in a Town Meeting, you can guess where my sympathies lie. Richard Howard] which cites various works to support a definition about the psychology of events which cannot be explained by natural law, and which thus force the experiencer into deciding whether he/she is the subject of an illusion, or alternatively that the universe is ruled by a different set of laws than previously believed: "The fantastic occupies the duration of this uncertainty. Once we choose one answer or the other, we leave the fantastic for a neighboring genre, the uncanny or the marvellous. The fantastic is the hesitation experienced by a person who knows only the laws of nature, confronting an apparently supernatural event." -- Tzvetan Todorov, in "The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre", translated by Richard Howard, Ithaca NY: 1975, p.25 DEFINITIONS: what is fantasy?
